This type of sarcoma is known as undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma (UPS). It used to be called a malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH). Undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcomas are more commonly in people aged 60 to 70. They can affect any part of the body, but most commonly develop in the legs and arms.
One particularly confusing diagnosis for patients is Malignant Fibrous Histiocytoma (MFH) or Undifferentiated Pleomorphic Sarcoma (UPS). Historically, MFH was first described in the early 1960s based on cell culture experiments that showed sarcoma cells from these tumors grew in patterns similar to fibroblasts and behaved similarly to ‘histiocytic’ tissue resident immune cells, such as macrophages. Undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma (UPS), previously known as malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH), is considered the most common type of soft tissue sarcoma. It has an aggressive biological behavior and a poor prognosis.

Atypical fibroxanthoma and undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma, or pleomorphic dermal sarcoma, are rare malignant cutaneous neoplasms existing along a clinicopathologic spectrum. Although these tumors share many similarities, recognition of distinguishing characteristics may predict differences in clinical behavior and outcomes. 2018-12-01 · Pleomorphic sarcomas are a heterogeneous group of mesenchymal neoplasms with widely varied clinical behavior but overlapping histologic appearances.

Definition. An aggressive sarcoma of soft tissues or bone that can arise from any part of the body, clinically presenting as swelling, mass, pain, pathological fracture and occasional systemic features and is characterized by high local recurrence and significant metastasis. Treatment for undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma usually involves surgery to remove the cancer cells. Other options include radiation therapy and drug treatments (systemic therapies), such as chemotherapy, targeted therapy and immunotherapy. Which treatments are best for you will depend on the size and location of your cancer.
